The Google's Guide to accurate results

Everyone trusts Google. But how accurate is that? Google gives the results based on the references of other sites given to your kaywords. E.g. if someones says "Most Useful Program ever" www.winrar.com , Google will show www.winrar.com whenever someone types "Most Useful Program ever" in the keywords.
But how can we be sure if the first result is the one with most references, and not some other site that pays to be advertised in Google? The site does not give away the number of references that this site have. Same tactics is used by Yahoo and other search engines. This is very bad for the credibility of these search engines...
GIVE THE PEOPLE THE NUMBER OF REFERENCES!!!
